Sa Nau

The intervention takes place in Building 601 of the Sa Coma service park. The project arises from the need to transform what was originally conceived as a military pavilion into a multifunctional building that incorporates contemporary ways of living, working, and socializing.

The architectural proposal seeks to strip back the building’s structure, enhancing the value of its regular and symmetrical nature, so characteristic of military constructions. In addition, in order to preserve its identity, the entire envelope is maintained, while improving its energy and climatic performance.

The central space, however, introduces the main innovation. The inner courtyard is transformed into a large skylight that incorporates a public scale and offers a meeting and gathering place towards which all other uses are oriented. The northeast wing is designated for offices, the southwest wing for exhibition or conference space, and the rooms in contact with the northwest façade accommodate the service areas.

Despite having a specific program, the intervention aims to make the building a flexible space adaptable to future needs. Furthermore, through the new distribution proposal, the spaces are enhanced in dignity; the extensive compartmentalization of the rooms gives way to openness, as well as improved natural lighting and ventilation.

The exterior spaces are treated with the same respect and care. The identity of the place is preserved, while improving its functionality and adaptation to current use and contemporary conditions.
